S: 1 Samuel 14:36 Then Saul said, "Let's chase the Philistines all night and plunder them until sunrise. Let's destroy every last one of them." His men replied, "We'll do whatever you think is best." But the priest said, "Let's ask God first."
O: Saul was getting ready to just go out and fight the Philistines. The priest wanted to ask God before going out and God said no because there was sin in the camp.
A: I tend to run out and make decisions without asking God first. Then after making a decision I ask God to bless or I ask Him to repair the wrong decision I had made. The old saying work smarter, not harder.
P: Jesus, help me today to ask you first before making decisions. You are waiting for me to ask and you want to guide me. All I need to do is ask. Be my guide today. In Jesus name, Amen
S: 1 Sam 14:8-10 Jonathan said, "Come, then; we will cross over toward the men and let them see us. If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,' we will stay where we are and not go up to them. But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the LORD has given them into our hands."
O:In the midst of a battle, Jonathan hatches a scheme to raid the Philistines with his armor bearer. His whole strategy for learning God's will was the reaction of the enemy. What if the soldiers had said something else? How did Jonathan know?
A: Did Jonathan assume God's answer? Had he prayed intently before choosing to go? Did he just have such enormous faith that he went, laid out a course, and trusted God to honor it? This is very prickly for me. It sounds like Isaac's servant looking for a wife for Jacob- "If a girl offers a drink for my camels, she's the one for Jacob." Really? That's it? That's how you choose a wife? That's how you know God's provision? That isn't presuming upon God?
P: Lord- are these examples of enormous faith? Or is there more to the story? Is the lesson that with faith, all things are possible? Or something else? You were with Jonathan. Did you talk to him beforehand? Are we supposed to take leaps of faith that big? Is Jonathan's story a direct contrast to Saul's a few verses later? Jonathan could presume because he had more faith/obedience? Saul couldn't? I'm totally lost on this one, Lord!
