Title: "Obedience is Better than Sacrifice" Mentor: Saul
S: 1 Samuel 15:3,9 "Now go and completely destroys the entire Amalekite nation—men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys." 9. Saul and his men spared Agag's life and kept the best of the sheep and goats, the cattle, the fat calves, and the lambs—everything, in fact, that appealed to them. They destroyed only what was worthless or of poor quality."
O: Saul was partially obedient in this passage and God wasn't pleased. He was supposed to "wipe out" the Amalekites, including everything and everyone. Saul spared sheep and goats, cattle , calves and lambs. Because he was only partially obedient, God removed Saul from leadership of Israel. Saul justified this by saying he was going to sacrifice to God the livestock. Samuel said obedience is better than sacrifice.
A: What area of my life am I partially obedient to God? What area am I partially compromising because I believe my plan is better than God's?
P: Jesus I want to be completely obedient to you today. Reveal in my life areas that I am not completely obedient to you in. Help me to trust in your plan and not try and devise my plan B. In Jesus name, Amen
Scripture: "In the same way, when you obey me you should say, 'we are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.'" - Luke 17:10
Observation: Jesus tells his disciples that they are his servants (the verses before this tell of a master and his servant). They are expected to obey his command and to serve him. He tells the disciples to remember that they are unworthy.
Application: A few things stand out - 1. Jesus says WHEN you obey, not IF - He expects me to obey what he asks ofme. 2. "unworthy servants" - so often I feel righted or like I am owed something - happiness, obedient kids, ease of life, etc. but really I am not worthy or deserving of anything. I live by God's grace alone. 3. "simply done our duty" - I think of a soldier who carries out the 'duty' his commanding officer gives - he will complete it and work to the best of his ability even if it costs his life. So, I need to grow in being immediately & faithfully obedient to God - I need to remember that I deserve death and have life only by the grace of Jesus - I need to 'simply do the duty' of living my life for Christ.
Prayer: Father God thank you for your love - thank you for reminding me of my unworthiness and your greatness. I pray that you will grow me in obedience to you & your will for me. Let me know well the mission you have forme & enable to be fulfill the duty you have called me to. By your grace alone I live & I am thankful. In Jesus Name Amen.
Title: Jesus = Immanuel = God with us Mentor: Angel
Scripture: Matthew 1:21 "And she will have a son and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."
Observe: The angel was speaking to Joseph and said that Mary is going to have a baby, they were to name him Jesus for he would be the peoples savior from sin.
Apply: Because this prophecy came true in v23 - I can believe Jesus is my savior from sin. I need to help Ellie and Graham to believe also that Jesus is their savior.
Prayer: Jesus, help Ellie and Graham to know that you're their savior from sin.
