S: Hebrews 10:30b "The Lord will judge his own people. (31) It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
O: What happened to once saved always saved? Fear of God. The context is with someone who professes to have believed in Jesus and deliberately continues sinning - these people will experience a "terrible thing" by falling into the hands of the living God. God will judge his own people.
A: Our small group introduced the fear of God into our study this week. We may want to dismiss the concept by speaking of Christians saved by grace through faith (which is true) and then not working our salvation out with fear. It is possible to grieve the Holy Spirit by how I live.
P: Father God, help me to fear you more today by how I live. I know that you have saved me by grace, however this did not come without fear. Your wrath was poured out on Jesus. Your wrath can be poured out on me if I live in deliberate continued sin. It is a terrible thing to fall into your hands and so I ask today that you keep me from falling. By the power of the cross and Jesus' blood, enable me to walk for you today. IJN, Amen
Mentor: David Title: What's my attitude toward blessings?
S: 1 Chronicles 17:16-20 (NLT) 16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O Lord God! 18 “What more can I say to you about the way you have honored me? You know what your servant is really like. 19 For the sake of your servant, O Lord, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known. 20 “O Lord, there is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you! "
O: 1)David had suffered for many years, but God was with him. 2) Then the kingdom is given to him, and he's thankful and decides to build a temple for God. 3) God's response is… I don't need a temple. 4) But… God says he will bless you, and establish David's kingdom forever. 5) David's response... Who am I to receive a blessing like this. 6) And God, there is none like you.
A: David's heart, and humility were amazing. He didn't have a sense of entitlement to God's blessing. He was humbly overwhelmed. Then quickly he returns to praising God. How did he get a heart like that and maintain it? How does entitlement attitude fit in with claiming promises? I will talk to God about this today.
P: Lord, thanks so much for all you have done in my life. You have faithfully guided me through some pretty serious shipwrecks. God, indeed there is none like you. You are unique and above all other creatures. Create in me a clean heart oh Lord. I desire to have a heart like David: one that seeks after you all my life, at any cost. I also desire a heart that doesn't obey... just to be blessed. I don't want to feel like if I do my part.... then you owe it to me to do the things I think are good and necessary. This thinking process is deeply engrained in me. I see it now Lord. I never saw it before. I thought if I obeyed (at least according to my standards) that you would bless. But now I see how far I fall short of true obedience, and that I never will deserve your blessings. Lord, thank you for all the blessings you have given me. I love you Lord, continue to teach me how to seek you more and more. Amen
